TAKING IT INTO YOUR LIFE - Life Mastery Program

This article is an excerpt taken from a LMP group call. It gives a wonderful insight into some aspects of what LMP is about:

Sharing: Sometimes, in our LMP meetings we start giving feedback and advice instead of using reflective listening. We want to finish the conversation and to save time we start to give advice.

David: The LMP is about taking basic things, skills from the Foundational Seminar and from the Advanced Course and mastering them, becoming expert in utilizing them in our lives. That's what LMP is designed to do. From avoiding roadblocks to communication to actively giving and receiving feedback, to being in strategies for living rather than strategies for survival, to become aware of when we're coming from a place of looking good and being right instead of coming from a place of authenticity. This idea of being right, this is a common strategy for survival, without us even knowing. It becomes more important to be right than to be with a person, to create the understanding, the closeness, the experience we really want. It's especially important to not be attached to being right when we are right. Sometimes we may actually be right, we're using the skills, the correct principles, we're being accountable, using communication skills, and the other person is not. So we're doing things right and they're not, and then suddenly we can come from that place of feeling superior and being right and looking good.

We learn and practice to give and receive honest feedback. There are different types of feedback: There's appreciative feedback, there's sharing constructive feedback. And it's both an art and a science to know when is what sort of communication most appropriate. In the meetings there are guidelines and within them you create the meeting. Your personalities and inspiration creates the meeting within the guidelines. Sometimes we think "ok, if we just give advice and solve the problem then its quicker". Sometimes in discussing about communication strategies people say that advising and feedback seem to be quicker and that empathic listening skills take so much longer. It does take longer up front, but in the long rung it's not. Because we're fully with the person and we're not creating new problems. The process of listening to and speaking with, it's a self-empowering process. Speakers are not feeling patronized. So to practice the communication skills in good consciousness, in the long run it saves time in being effective the way we want to be effective in relationships. We're so much seeking to be understood and sometimes that's the only thing a person's looking for.
