CREATING A SACRED SPACE

by Annette Bonomo, Switzerland

In seminars and coaching David and Marie often speak about creating a sacred space. Each of us who has taken the courses or some coaching sessions has experienced that sacred space and the immense potential for healing and growth that lies there.

Recently I was in class with a small group of 8 and 9 year old children coming from countries all over the world. A prime focus of this class is to learn German, though at this time we were practising mathematics. One Vietnamese girl had troubles finding the solutions for the math problems. This surprised me, as in written work she always does very well. So I asked her what was going on. She started to cry and expressed her fears and experiences of being in a foreign country, not knowing the language and not having many friends. I realised that right now mathematics was not of primary important, and that this child needed the time and space to express her feelings.

The other children were struck by her outburst of emotions. A 9 year old boy then started to tell his story, his fear of being in a foreign country, and how he often cried when he first came to the country because he didn't understand anything and couldn't express himself. He told the Vietnamese girl not to worry, that she is allowed to make mistakes and that she can only learn form them. I was amazed.

Previously, that boy had always teased the Vietnamese girl, and now he was showing so much affection and understanding! Then another girl shared her experience of learning a new language and finding new friends. I sat there, not saying anything, just listening to the children talking to each other. I wondered at that moment who the teacher was. Simply by allowing the children to express with each other, by giving them space, they solved some important issues, and created a closeness that hadn't been there before. I realised that my role as a teacher is not mainly to instruct, but to give space to the children to learn from each other, and by doing so I can learn so much from them. After some time I asked the children if we could continue with math. With their agreement we started to practice again. The Vietnamese girl still had some difficulties in finding the solutions and saying them in German, but she was less distressed about it and the others in the class were very supportive.

This incident taught me a great lesson about problem solving. Often I have the urge to shy away from addressing problems, because I don't know a resolution in advance or I think it will require a big effort to present the solution. But actually, I don't need to present a solution. It is is already there; the only thing it needs is space- space in which there is trust to let it unfold.
